Thematic city tours through Berlin

City Tour" :    HISTORICAL BERLIN

Your City guided tour: The German art historian and publicist Karl Scheffler (1869-1951) made the following observation in his book ‘Berlin – ein Stadtschicksal’ (Berlin – A City Destiny) published in 1910 (freely translated):
“Berlin doesn’t want love from its residents. While deep down the soul of the city is not national, it is also not sentimental. As if with a witty word of self-irony this toughly determined one-off city helps itself to get over the hidden tragedy of its existence (…) over the tragedy of a destiny, which makes Berlin (…) a city condemned forever to becoming and never being.” (S. 266 f.; from: Wikipedia).

Try over the course of this approximately three-hour guided tour from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate to form your own impression. The route through the historic centre of the German capital leads us past the top ten places associated very closely with the city’s long history, which compared with that of other major cities has without doubt been especially full of change: Alexanderplatz, Nikolaiviertel, the Berlin City Palace construction site, Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Gendarmenmarkt, Wilhelmstrasse, Brandenburg Gate and more. The tour’s time line stretches from the first mention of the adjacent twin town of Cölln in the year 1237 to the present day.

Highlight 2019 :
2019 : 30 Years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Time passes and 30 years have passed since the unforgettable 9 November 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall with all its positive consequences with a reunited Germany on 3 October 1990, but also with a Brandenburg Gate that no longer divides Europe but reunites it. The investments were enormous, so that the inhabitants of the former GDR could enjoy the same economic conditions as in the FRG. Today there are still discrepancies between the new and old German states, but Germany can proudly celebrate this global event. So From 4 to 10 November 2019 a Path to revolution is organized. On the different stages there are exhibitions, cultural events with a highlight on 9 November, where musical scenes symbolize the fall of the wall and the imminent reunification of Germany.

Potsdam with LatLon

The City of Potsdam

Potsdam was the second residence of the electors of Brandenburg and kings of Prussia who sought peace and recreation on the outskirts of Berlin. Several generations from the House of Hohenzollern – notably, Frederick the Great –contributed to create a genuine idyll. A number of palaces, lodges and pavilions were built amid a beautiful natural setting, and exquisite landscape gardening did the rest. The Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens is responsible for the exemplary administration and maintenance of about 30 sites. But Potsdam’s townscape shows a wealth of variety. After expanding in the 18 th century to become a garrison city, the emerging bourgeoisie discovered it in the 19 th century. Their numerous villas and mansions have seen an impressive renaissance since German reunification.
